What is IoT?

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to a network of physical objects (“things”) embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies for the purpose of connecting and exchanging data with other devices and systems over the Internet. These devices range from common household items to complex industrial vehicles.

Key Components of IoT

  • Sensors/Devices: These collect data from their environment. This can be as simple as measuring temperature or as complex as streaming live video.
  • Connectivity: The collected data is sent to the cloud via a variety of means, including cellular, satellite, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, low-power wide area networks (LPWAN), or directly connecting to the Internet via Ethernet.
  • Data Processing: Once the data reaches the cloud, software performs some sort of processing on it. This can be as simple as checking the temperature measurement against a certain threshold.
  • User Interface: The information is made useful to the end user in some way. This could be through an alert sent to the user, such as a text, email, or notification.

IoT Applications

  • Smart Homes: Devices such as smart thermostats, lights, and security systems that can be controlled remotely and offer automation features.
  • Healthcare: Wearable devices that monitor patients’ health in real time and send alerts to caregivers.
  • Transportation: IoT can improve transportation systems through real-time traffic monitoring, smart parking systems, and fleet management.
  • Agriculture: IoT applications in agriculture include soil moisture monitoring, automated irrigation systems, and livestock tracking.
  • Industrial IoT (IIoT): Uses IoT technologies in manufacturing to increase operational efficiency and productivity through predictive maintenance and real-time analytics.
  • Environmental Monitoring: IoT devices can monitor environmental conditions such as air quality, water quality, and weather conditions.
