Network communication media are physical channels through which data is transmitted between devices on a network. They can be broadly divided into two main types: wired and wireless.
Wired Media
- Twisted Pair Cable: This consists of pairs of insulated copper wires twisted together. It is commonly used for Ethernet connections in homes and small offices. While it is cost-effective and easy to install, it is limited to short distances and is susceptible to electromagnetic interference.
- Coaxial Cable: This type of cable has a central conductor, an insulating layer, a metallic shield, and an outer insulating layer. It is used for cable television and high-speed internet1. It offers high bandwidth and is less prone to interference, but is thicker and more expensive than twisted pair cables.
- Fiber Optic Cable: This uses thin strands of glass or plastic fibers to transmit data using light signals. It is known for its high data transmission speeds and immunity to electromagnetic interference1. It is ideal for long-distance communication, but can be more expensive to install.
- Wireless Media
Radio Waves: These are used for long-distance wireless communication. They are commonly used in cell phones, Wi-Fi, and other wireless communication systems2.
